Lahore: In the early hours of Thursday, 21 year old World Snooker Champion Ahsan Ramzan was apprehended by the authorities and allegedly subjected to mistreatment during the arrest.
The incident occurred when Green Town police in Lahore conducted a raid on a late-night operating snooker club, leading to the detainment of the esteemed World Champion, Ahsan Ramzan.
Subsequently, Ramzan was taken to the police station and held in the lockup for a duration of 15 minutes, during which he claims to have experienced verbal and emotional ‘abuse’.
Despite informing the police about his prestigious title as the World Snooker Champion, his pleas seemingly fell on deaf ears, and he endured continuous harassment.
Only upon the arrival of one of his friends was Ahsan released from the police station.
The snooker champion in his video statement recounted that he was with other players training for upcoming events at a snooker academy in the Township area when cops from Green Town Police Station raided the snooker club for keeping it open till late at night.
Ahsan, who won the titles of World and Asian Champion recently, cried while narrating the incident.
Pictures of the world champion putting on his belt can be seen outside the jail.
In the video, he said that he told the policemen that he was the world champion. They responded: “You have done that for yourself.”
He added: “I have always tried to uplift my country, and I was successful, but what did I know that I will be humiliated in my own country?”
He further remarked that it seemed to him that snooker was the only game in this country that seemed to be treated as an “orphan” and was neglected.
In response to the distressing incident, Ramzan has called upon the Prime Minister and the caretaker Chief Minister to take note of the occurrence and to take appropriate action against the involved police officials.
Ramzan rose to fame in 2021 as he became the second youngest snooker player in history to win the world amateur snooker championship. He is only the third Pakistani snooker player after Mohammad Yousuf and Mohammad Asif to win the prestigious title.
