WEB DESK The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has reported a 1.3 per cent decline in total power generation for the fiscal year 2023-24, amounting to 127,843 GWh.

This represents a decrease from the previous year’s generation of 129,592 GWh and falls below the five-year average of 129,538 GWh.

In June 2024, electricity generation saw a year-on-year decrease of 1.9 per cent, totalling 13,461 GWh compared to 13,715 GWh in June 2023. However, on a month-over-month basis, there was a notable increase of 6.7 per cent from 12,618 GWh in May 2024.

The average fuel cost for power generation also saw a reduction, declining by 11 per cent year-on-year to Rs8.61 per KWh in June 2024 from Rs9.63 per KWh in June 2023.

Breaking down the annual figures by source, generation from Coal, High-Speed Diesel (HSD), Residual Fuel Oil (RFO), Gas, Nuclear, imports from Iran, Mixed, Wind, Bagasse, and Solar all experienced year-on-year decreases of 3.4 per cent, 53 per cent, 54.1 per cent, 17.9 per cent, 0.3 per cent, 18.7 per cent, 98.5 per cent, 2.3 per cent, 14 per cent, and 3.4 per cent, respectively.

Conversely, power generation from Hydel and Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) increased by 9.6 per cent and 6.5 per cent year-on-year, respectively.

Hydel emerged as the leading source of electricity, contributing 31.1 per cent to the total generation. Nuclear followed with an 18.8 per cent share, RLNG at 18.5 per cent, Coal at 15.7 per cent, and Gas at 9.3 per cent.
