KARACHI: A massive protest over prolonged power outage on Friday night has brought traffic to a standstill on the National Highway near Quaidabad, Karachi.
Residents took to the streets around 8 pm Friday, voicing anger over hours-long electricity suspension.
The demonstration is still continuing, severely disrupting traffic flow from Quaidabad to Malir Halt on the National Highway.
Security on high alert as rush in cattle markets intensifies
Long lines of vehicles, including heavy traffic, remain stuck, causing immense hardship for commuters.
Protesters say they will not disperse until power is restored.
The situation worsened as families returning with sacrificial animals for Eidul Azha found themselves stranded in the gridlock.
Several rounds of negotiations between police and protesters have failed. Meanwhile, amid the traffic chaos, criminal elements reportedly took advantage of the unrest.
Armed robbers snatched a motorcycle from a young man and fled, according to sources.
The city administration is yet to issue an official statement.
