ISLAMABAD: With Ramazan just a few days away, the prices of dates, chicken and eggs have witnessed a significant increase.
The profiteers have become active ahead of the holy month Ramazan, increasing date prices by up to 30 per cent, making them unaffordable for many citizens.
In the market, Iranian dates are being sold for Rs 600 per kg, while Pakistani dates cost Rs 450 per kg. Wholesalers have blamed excessive taxes for the price hike.

“The government has increased customs duties, which has affected rates. Higher transport and operational costs also contribute to the price surge,” said a trader.
Citizens complain that the price of a 50 kg sack has risen by Rs 80. “Dates that used to cost Rs 100 per quarter kg are now Rs 120-130, and shopkeepers are selling them for Rs 150 per quarter kg,” said a buyer.
In just one week, egg prices have risen by Rs 20 per dozen, while live chicken has become Rs 20 per kg more expensive.
The price of garlic has increased by Rs 8 per kg, and sugar has seen an additional Rs 1 per kg hike.
