CERT advisory

ISLAMABAD: The National Cyber Emergency Response Team (CERT) has issued an important advisory for parents to protect children from the ever-increasing dangers of social media and online platforms.

The advisory urges parents to train children to be safe and responsible in the digital world, and educate them about the protection of personal information.

Parents should monitor children’s social media accounts and activities, including monitoring of messages, photos and posts.

The CERT advisory recommends that children should be taught to not share home address, school details and other information that can give away their location and personal details on online platforms.

Parents should also work with their children to strengthen privacy settings of their social media accounts. CERT advisory also suggests using parental control software effectively, such as Google Family Link, Microsoft Family Safety etc.

Parents also need to ensure that children are not being exposed to inappropriate content, and try to limit their social media usage time.

Train children to immediately alert them to suspicious content, the advisory suggests.

Moreover, parents should train children in dealing with online challenges and conflicts, and make them aware of online harassment and cyberbullying, so they may remain protected in the digital sphere.
