PTI boycotts Senate leadership elections, challenges in court

PTI challeneges in court

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has taken the election of the Senate Chairman and Deputy Chairman to the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

Earlier, the party’s core committee told media that the party will boycott these elections. PTI declared the elections for the seats of chairman and deputy chairman Senate as ‘unconstitutional’.

Senate session called tomorrow for swearing-in, leadership election

Sources disclosed that it was an opinion in the party that since the House of federation was incomplete due to the postponement of Senate elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, therefore elections for these coveted seats were not constitutional.

Five PTI senators have filed a constitutional petition in the IHC, seeking to halt the impending election process. At the heart of the matter lies the interpretation of constitutional provisions governing the Senate. With the stipulated number of Senate members set at 96, ensuring equal representation from all provinces, PTI contends that the current composition falls short of this mandate.

Minister rubbishes Imran Khan’s allegations against establishment

PTI’s argument hinges on the imbalance in Senate representation from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where the allotted number of senators has not been fulfilled. Citing this discrepancy, the party asserts that the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision to postpone Senate elections in the province caused this gap.

PTI contends that now the elections for the senate leadership should be delayed until Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s senate election is held.
