RAWALPINDI/LAHORE: Police in Rawalpindi detained Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub, along with seven other senior leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), amid a widening crackdown on the party. Among those taken into custody were three sisters and a cousin of the PTI founder Imran Khan, according to party sources.

Authorities also arrested Sahibzada Hamid Raza, head of the Sunni Ittehad Council, and Punjab Assembly’s Opposition Leader Malik Ahmed Khan Bhachar.

The arrests triggered a strong reaction in Punjab Assembly, where opposition lawmakers staged a protest. They stood on their seats, shouted slogans, and demanded the immediate release of the detained PTI leaders.

PTI’s Rana Shehbaz announced a boycott of the assembly proceedings in protest, prompting opposition members to walk out of the house.

A verbal spat also broke out between the government MPA Uzma Kardar and members of the opposition during the demonstration.

Due to the absence of a quorum following the opposition walkout, the assembly session was adjourned until 2pm the next day.
