ISLAMABAD: Motorways M1 and M2 connecting Islamabad to Peshawar and Lahore respectively have been closed due to the protest call by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
The blockade of these vital routes has resulted in major travel disruptions for commuters and transport services, leaving thousands stranded.
According to reports, the closure of the motorways is part of the government’s broader security measures to prevent PTI workers and supporters from reaching the capital’s D-Chowk, where the party has called for a mass protest.
Containers and barricades have been placed at entry points along the motorways, with heavy police and paramilitary deployment ensuring that protestors cannot access key routes into Islamabad.
PTI protest: Islamabad completely sealed, mobile services suspended
Traffic of the North Side has been diverted from Shamkot(Khanewal TP) to N5 North excluding Lahore traffic (KM 54) due to Law & Order situation
Commuters, especially those traveling between major cities, are experiencing long delays, and alternative routes are overwhelmed with traffic. Transporters have also raised concerns about the economic impact of the motorway shutdown, as goods and essential supplies cannot be transported efficiently.
The motorway police has advised commuters to avoid unnecessary travel on the M1 and M2 motorways to avoid inconvenience due to PTI protest.
The closure of M1 and M2 comes amid a larger lockdown of the federal capital, with cellular services suspended in several areas, Metro bus services halted, and schools and offices closed.
The protest, led by PTI founder Imran Khan, is aimed at voicing their support for the judiciary.
