LAHORE: Punjab Police has finalised security plan to ensure that Muharram is safe and peaceful, said Inspector General (IG) Dr Usman Anwar.
He said that a comprehensive strategy has been formulated for the security of mourning processions and gatherings. More than 38,000 gatherings and more than 9,200 mourning processions will be provided with full security during the Ashura of Muharram.
IG Anwar also informed that more than 232,000 officers and personnel will perform security duties throughout the province including Lahore during the Ashra of Muharram. Out of these, over 28,000 officers and personnel will be deployed only in Lahore for Muharram security.
Punjab IG also informed that more than 53,000 personnel will be deployed for Majalis security, and 38,000 volunteers will provide assistance in the security arrangements for mourning processions.
All field formations including the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), Special Branch, Traffic Police, and Dolphin Squad will perform duty in Muharram security arrangements.
IG Usman Anwar also urged religious scholars or all schools of thought as well as community leaders to ensure peace and understanding during Muharram. He said that any nefarious attempts by anti-national elements to spread discord and disrupt peace should be thwarted through interfaith harmony.
