Punjab govt shortens waiting period for driving licence retest

Punjab driving licence

LAHORE: In a move set to benefit many aspiring drivers in Punjab, the government has amended the Punjab Motor Vehicle Rules 1969 to reduce the waiting period for retaking the road driving test.

Previously, candidates who failed the test had to wait a gruelling 42 days before they could try again. Now, the waiting period has been shortened to just 15 days.

The change comes amid a broader crackdown on motorists without valid driving licences and those failing to adhere to safety regulations, such as wearing helmets.

With the shorter waiting time, candidates who do not pass the test on their first attempt can quickly retake it, promoting a more efficient process for obtaining a valid driving licence.

According to an announcement from the official Punjab government and Lahore Traffic Police Twitter accounts, the amendment is aimed at simplifying the licensing process while maintaining rigorous standards.

To obtain a driving licence in Punjab, candidates must pass both a road driving test, which assesses practical skills on a designated course, and an e-sign test, which evaluates theoretical knowledge within a two-week window.

By enabling candidates to retake the road driving test sooner, the government hopes to encourage more motorists to obtain their licences legally and responsibly, contributing to improved road safety.

The adjustment underscores a broader effort to ensure that only competent and well-trained drivers are on the roads, thereby reducing accidents and promoting safer driving habits.

Overall, the reduction in the waiting period represents a positive development for both aspiring drivers and traffic authorities in Punjab.
