Punjab wheat farmers ‘reject’ government’s wheat package

LAHORE: Punjab farmers’ association leader Khalid Khokhar held a press conference here today, protesting against the provincial government’s wheat package. He said that the wheat farmers in Punjab reject the package brought by the Government of Punjab.

“We will massively reduce cultivation of wheat next year. This year, we have suffered an irreparable loss in wheat cultivation,” he said, adding that the costs of electricity, urea and fertilizer are all very high for Punjab’s farmers.

“We reject the Punjab government’s wheat package. The government has destroyed agriculture,” he added.

Khokhar lamented that electricity connections of thousands of farmers have been cut off. He urged all political parties to refrain from turning wheat into a political issue. “Sindh’s politicians do politics in Punjab but do not give rights to Sindh’s farmers. Punjab’s politicians speak up on the rights of farmers in Sindh but leave Punjab’s farmers helpless,” he said in his press conference. He said that no political party considers the problems of farmers.

“Farmers have been sacrificed to provide cheap flour to the urban population,” Khalid Khokhar said. “Farmers are egg-laying hens. This egg-laying hen should not be economically-murdered,” he added.
