Punjab widows to get lifetime pension

Punjab widows to get full pension

LAHORE: The Punjab government has reinstated lifetime family pensions for widows and unmarried daughters of deceased government employees.

A fresh notification issued by the provincial finance department stated that the Punjab Civil Service Pension Rules had been amended to restore the previous facility, allowing beneficiaries to receive pensions for life.

Last year, the government had restricted family pensions to a 10-year period following the death of a government employee. The latest move reverses that decision.

Under the revised rules, if a deceased employee had more than one wife, the pension will be equally divided among all widows. However, the facility will cease if any widow remarries.

The provincial cabinet, led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, had earlier approved lifetime pensions for widows.

The Finance Ministry had introduced several changes last year aimed at managing the rising pension bill. These changes, issued through three separate office memoranda, were designed to ease the federal government’s financial burden while continuing support for retired employees and their families.

The previous amendments had set the family pension duration at 10 years, extended the Special Family Pension period to 25 years, and allowed disabled children of deceased retired employees to receive pensions for life.
