Punjab’s crackdown on smoke emitting vehicles, Rs 171.18m fines imposed

LAHORE: Fines worth Rs 171.18 million have been imposed in the last 24 hours across Punjab province on drivers of smoke emitting vehicles. The fines come as part of the crackdown in the province, targeting vehicles that are worsening the already dire smog situation.

Punjab Traffic Police Spokesperson said that during the last 24 hours, challan tickets have been issued to more than 8,559 vehicles emitting smoke. Spokesperson, Traffic Police Punjab

Fitness certificates of over 10 vehicles have been suspended for emitting smoke, the spokesperson said, adding that route permits of more than 12 vehicles have also been suspended.

FIRs have been registered against more than 15 vehicles emitting smoke, while over 1,100 vehicles were stopped for emitting smoke, he added.

Heavy fines were imposed on more than 3,731 tractor trolleys that were loaded with soil and sand without tarpaulin and were causing air pollution.

The crackdown and fines are aimed at improving the air quality of the province, which is categorised as hazardous on the AQI index. Earlier, the provincial government also issued directives for closure of schools and colleges across the province.
