Quetta reports new case of Congo virus

QUETTA: A new case of Congo virus was reported in Quetta, bringing the total number of patients in the province to 20 so far.
The latest case was confirmed in a 42-year-old patient from Zarghoon Road, who was admitted to Fatima Jinnah Hospital in the provincial capital.
The patient tested positive for Congo virus and is currently receiving treatment.
The recent case follows the confirmation of Congo virus in another patient at the same hospital, increasing the total number of Congo virus patients under treatment there to two.
Four deaths from the virus have been reported in the province so far this year. The hospital administration said they were monitoring and treat affected patients while managing the outbreak.

Symptoms of Congo virus typically begin suddenly with high fever, muscle aches, and joint pain. As the illness progresses, it can lead to more severe symptoms, including bleeding from various parts of the body, gastrointestinal distress, and liver damage.
The disease can be fatal if not treated promptly and effectively.
Prevention of Congo virus involves several measures, such as avoiding tick bites by using insect repellents, wearing protective clothing, and conducting regular tick checks. People living in areas with known outbreaks should also avoid contact with livestock and other animals that might be infected.
Proper hygiene and protective gear is important for those handling animals or working in environments where the virus is present.
There is no specific antiviral treatment for Congo virus; instead, management focuses on supportive care. This includes maintaining hydration, managing symptoms, and providing treatment for secondary infections. In severe cases, hospital care is required to monitor and manage complications..
