ISLAMABAD: A rain-bearing weather system will be entering the country tomorrow (Saturday), bringing widespread rain and snowfall, further intensifying the ongoing cold wave.
A frontal weather system is present over upper parts of the country and is likely to persist until January 6, according to the Met office.
Rain in Punjab
The new weather system will bring rain across Punjab, with Lahore likely to experience rainfall by Sunday. The system is expected to amplify cold conditions, causing temperatures to drop further.
Severe fog continues to disrupt travel in the region, with several motorways closed due to poor visibility and causing delays in flights.
The fog is expected to persist, especially during mornings and evenings, posing challenges for commuters.
In Lahore, the minimum temperature has been recorded at 6°C, with a maximum of 15°C anticipated.
Snowfall in Gilgit-Baltistan and Northern Regions
The first snowfall of the new year has blanketed Gilgit-Baltistan and the upper Neelum Valley, making the weather more severe.
According to reports, over 10 inches of snow has accumulated at the Lowari Tunnel and efforts are being made by the local authorities to clear the road. Travellers have been advised to use snow chains for safety.
Despite forecasts, skies in Murree and Galiyat remain clear, though snow in the region has exacerbated travel difficulties. It is expected that snowfall will continue till January 6.
The PMD has issued advisories for tourists and locals to avoid unnecessary travel to upper areas due to harsh conditions.
Another cold spell for Karachi
Karachi, currently experiencing cold and dry weather, is preparing for a further temperature drop. Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfraz predicts icy winds from Quetta will sweep through the city, reducing temperatures to single digits.
The minimum temperature is expected to hover around 13°C, while the maximum may reach 27°C.
