ISLAMABAD: The spillways of Rawal Dam were opened on Friday as the water in the reservoir increased after heavy downpour in the twin cities.

According to officials, the water level of the dam had risen up to 1,751.90 feet, while the capacity of the dam was 1,752 feet.after water levels touched 1,752 feet.

Before opening the Rawal Dam spillways, sirens sounded for 30 minutes so that people along Korang Nullah would refrain from fishing and bathing downstream.

Residents living near urban river channels were advised to avoid these areas to stay safe. Those in low-lying regions were asked to follow all safety measures to protect themselves and their property.

In the event of an emergency, the public is encouraged to contact the district administration by dialing 16. Livestock owners were also being told to move their animals to higher ground without delay.

Due to the heavy rains in Islamabad since Thursday, the district administration is closely monitoring river channels and bridges, with strict oversight continuing to ensure public safety.

 All necessary preparations have been made to handle potential flooding, according to the administration.

The spill ways of the dam were also opened four days back on August 26 after it reached its dead level.
