Reserved seats dispute: PHC to hear contempt of court case today

Sunni Ittehad Council

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) is set to address contempt of court petitions concerning the refusal to permit elected members to take oath on specific seats.

The hearing will be presided over by a two-member bench, composed of Justice Atiq Shah and Justice Syed Arshad Ali.

The essence of the matter revolves around the alleged obstruction encountered by elected officials in assuming their rightful positions.

The provincial government of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) backed candidates claim that the seats in concern belong to them as they have joined Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC). However, in an earlier ruling, the PHC ruled that the seats constitutionally belong to opposition parties.

Now the provincial government is refusing to allow elected members to take oath. Another point of contention now plaguing the whole fiasco is the senate election, which was delayed in the province due to these very reserved seats.
