While the move is aimed at addressing affordability concerns among citizens, the Naan Bai Association rejected the decision. The association cited a lack of consultation by the provincial government.

The association’s president criticised the government for cutting roti prices without engaging with the relevant stakeholders.

The president questioned the government’s prioritisation, suggesting that attention should also be given to reducing electricity and gas prices. He also announced plans to convene a meeting on Friday to devise a future ‘course of action’.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister of Punjab Maryam Nawaz defended the decision. She stated that the price of roti differed across different cities. She said that her government was committed to ensuring affordability for all citizens.

The CM also blamed the previous government for the high wheat prices, accusing them of neglect. “Due to the wrong decisions of the PTI government, roti was kept out of the reach of [ordinary citizens]”, Maryam Nawaz stated.

The latest reduction follows a previous one by the Punjab government when it announced that price of roti was slashed to Rs15 on May 11. The announcement followed intense negotiations with the Naan Bai Association.

The previous reduction was implemented immediately due to ample wheat supply and declining flour prices.
