Rs2b were allocated for film industry: Marriyum Aurangzeb

KARACHI: Information and Broadcasting Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb on Sunday hinted that the country’s first music policy focusing on preserving production will be considered in an upcoming cabinet meeting, after the success of the film policy.

Addressing the Icon Awards 2023 ceremony, she highlighted the incumbent government’s efforts in forming a Film Finance Committee and said that Rs2 billion were earmarked for a year to facilitate filmmakers. 

She said that work on the country’s first film policy started in 2016. After input from artists, producers, and film industry workers, the policy was approved in 2018.

Under the film policy, cinamas were exempted from income tax for five years. She said that there was no import duty on cinema equipment, and that there would be no sales tax.

Speaking on the assets of Pakistan Television (PTV), the minister emphasised the importance of artists and preserving their efforts. She said PTV archives had been digitalised and made available online. She said that PTV Academy had been renovated after a 29-year period.

Marriyum also informed that 12 studios had been established in Radio Pakistan. A voice hunt programme was started, adding 75 years of Radio Pakistan archives to digitalised format.
