Senate body rejects Private varsities Bill

Islamabad – The Senate Standing Committee on Education rejecting the passage of bills on the establishment of new universities and institutes  has emphasized that private universities must adhere to the proper procedures and fulfill all necessary requirements before seeking approval.

Last week, the National Assembly had passed 26 bills relating to the setting up of 26 universities and educational institutes in the public and private sector.

On Thursday, the Senate body, chaired by Chairman Irfan Siddiqui, stated that private universities have been attempting to establish themselves without obtaining the essential NOC, which is not in line with the regulations.

In light of this concern, the committee has decided to conduct thorough investigations before granting any approvals.

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) Chairman informed the committee that NOC will only be issued after all the operational prerequisites have been met. It has become evident that private universities must obtain the NOC before commencing their operations.

Notably, the Parliament has previously passed bills for the establishment of 35 private universities in the last two sessions. However, the Senate Standing Committee on Education’s recent decision signals a stricter approach towards ensuring compliance with the necessary regulations and standards by private universities seeking recognition.

The committee’s decision aims to safeguard the quality of education and maintain transparency in the establishment of private universities, ensuring that they meet the required standards before operating.
