Shahid Afridi praises accountability move against Faiz Hameed

Shahid Afridi tweet about Faiz Hameed

KARACHI: Former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi has commended the initiation of legal proceedings against former spy chief Lieutenant General (retired) Faiz Hameed, saying it reinforces the narrative of self-accountability within the current leadership.

In a post to his official X account, Afridi said the action taken against Hameed will dispel the perception that powerful individuals are beyond the reach of accountability.

Lala’s remarks came following the announcement by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) that Faiz Hameed has been formally charged under the Pakistan Army Act and is facing a Field General Court Martial.

The ISPR said the Field General Court Martial proceedings against Faiz Hameed began on August 12, 2024, under relevant sections of the Pakistan Army Act.

The military’s media wing confirmed that Lt Gen (Retd) Faiz has been formally indicted on charges including involvement in political activities, violations of the Official Secrets Act harming national security and interests, misuse of authority and official resources, and causing undue harm to individuals.

The ISPR further revealed that during the court martial process, a separate investigation is underway to probe Lt Gen (Retd) Faiz Hameed’s alleged involvement in violent incidents linked to unrest and disorder in the country. This includes events associated with the May 9 incidents.

The investigation also focuses on the role of malicious political elements and their alleged collusion in inciting violence during these events, the ISPR added. The ISPR assured that Lt Gen (Retd) Faiz Hameed is being provided all legal rights in accordance with the law during the Field General Court Martial proceedings.

It may be added here that Faiz Hameed was detained on August 12 following the initiation of a Court of Inquiry ordered by the Supreme Court of Pakistan to investigate alleged irregularities in a private real estate project.
