ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday congratulated Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev on the recently signed peace deal with Armenia, which resolved a three-decade-old conflict between the two neighbours.

In a telephonic conversation, the prime minister praised the Azeri president for his wisdom that led to ending the dispute and ushered in a new era of development for the Caucasus region.

At the same time, Shehbaz praised US President Donald Trump for the role he played by making the peace agreement a reality.

Meanwhile, Aliyev thanked Pakistan for the support it extended in the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute that resulted in multiple military confrontations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

“It is the bold and wise leadership of President Ilham Aliyev that resulted in peace in the region,” the prime minister said and extended his invitation to the Azeri president for visiting Pakistan.

Meanwhile, the two leaders are also expected meet on the sidelines of upcoming two-day SCO summit starting from August 31.

Pakistan and Azerbaijan have developed very close relations in recent years, the Sharifs have always been focused on how to become closer to the Central Asian States.
