SJC recommends Musarrat Hilali as SC judge


ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) has recommended elevation of acting Chief Justice Peshawar High Court (PHC) Musarrat Hilali for the slot of Supreme Court (SC) judge.

The SJC’s reached a unanimous in this regard during its session chaired by the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Atta Bandial.

If approved, she will become the second female judge, overall, to serve at the SC and the first one from the province of Khyber Pukhtunkhwa to be elevated to the coveted position.

Senior puisne judge of the SC Justice Qazi Faiz Isa also proposed her appointment.

SJC has forwarded the summary to the Parliamentary Committee on Judges’ appointment for final approval.

Earlier in May, Justice Hilali was appointed as the first female CJ of the PHC by President Dr Arif Alvi.

The SJC comprises of nine members including CJP and six senior most judges while other members include the Attorney General and the Minister for Law and Justice on behalf of the government.
