ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) on Thursday recommended the termination of service of former Supreme Court Judge Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi after finding him guilty of misconduct.
Last month, there was an unexpected development when Justice (retd) Naqvi resigned from his position amid allegations of misconduct. Surprisingly, Justice (retd) Ijazul Ahsan also resigned within a day, prompting speculation about the timing and reasons for their departure.
After the ruling, the Supreme Judicial Council proposed that Justice Mazahir Naqvi be removed from his position.
According to the announcement issued by the Supreme Judicial Council, allegations were levelled against judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts, leading to their public scrutiny. Several judges expressed concern over the accusations levelled against them.
The council, led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa and including Justice Sardar Tariq Masood, Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Chief Justice of Balochistan High Court Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan, and Chief Justice of Lahore High Court Justice Amir Bhatti, oversaw the proceedings.
In today’s statement, the judicial body stated that it reviewed six separate complaints in chronological order. Regarding five of these complaints, the opinions of the members to whom they were referred suggested that there was no merit to them, a conclusion with which the SJC agreed.
