Smog alert: Lahore AQI reaches above 400

LAHORE: Smog alert has been sounded in the provincial capital of Lahore as its Air Quality Index (AQI) reached above 400 on Monday, making it the most polluted city globally.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Lahore reached as high as 402 today, while the overall AQI stood at 224, according to the Punjab Environment Protection Department.
Ban on meetings with Adiala Jail prisoners extended
As winter approaches, Lahore AQI and smog levels have started to rise, causing discomfort for residents. Many are experiencing eye irritation, infections, and difficulty breathing in various areas.
The US Consulate area recorded an AQI of 273, Gaddafi Stadium’s vicinity registered 225, while the area near FC College reported 255. The highest AQI, 402, was recorded on Ghazi Road.
According to the Meteorological Department, Lahore’s temperatures are also adding to the discomfort. The minimum temperature is forecasted to be 21°C, while the maximum could reach 33°C. Winds have been mild, with a recorded speed of 10 kilometers per hour.
In an effort to combat smog, the Punjab government is planning artificial rain, although no schedule for this has been finalized yet.
The Ministry of Finance has approved a budget of 350 million rupees ($1.2 million) for the artificial rain project. The departments of environment and meteorology will play key roles in the execution of the plan.
