CDF appointment issue: PM Shehbaz sends summary to president for final approval

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has formally approved the appointment of the Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), taking effect from tonight.

Earlier, Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif had sent the summary for the appointment of the Field Marshal as CDF to President Asif Ali Zardari.

Meanwhile, Field Marshal Asim Munir will now lead both as Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff. His appointment is for a period of five years, making him the country’s first-ever CDF.

The CDF position was created under the 27th Constitutional Ame­nd­ment, replacing the now-abolished office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) chairman. The CJSC position was formally ended on November 27. 

Similarly, the president also approved a two-year extension in the tenure of the Air Chief Marshal (ACM) Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu. This extension will take effect after the completion of the current five-year term in March 2026.

Regarding the approval, Field Marshal also made remarks during an informal interaction with journalists at President’s Palace here.

He said, “Everything is fine and transparent before you. Things are moving in the right direction, and from here, Pakistan will now soar to greater heights.”

He also added, while referring to the CDFposition, “From here, Pakistan will now soar to greater heights.”
