LAHORE: In response to anticipated heat wave spells, jails across Punjab have been directed to implement special measures to ensure the well-being of prisoners and staff.
According to the notification issued by Inspector General (IG) Prisons, prisoners and employees should be provided with clean and cold water. Additionally, ample water must be supplied for bathing purposes to ensure hygiene and comfort for all inmates.
Each prison is required to establish heat stroke rooms equipped with ice boxes and ice to provide immediate relief to anyone affected by the heat.
This proactive step aims to prevent heat-related illnesses and ensure quick medical attention if necessary.

Moreover, it is mandatory to offer one cup of lemonade daily to women and juvenile prisoners, as well as those detained in Punjab Jails. This measure is intended to keep these vulnerable groups hydrated and to provide essential electrolytes during the hottest days.
Special instructions have also been issued for those working in jail farms and outdoor areas. Workers are to rest from 10am to 4pm to avoid the peak heat hours, reducing the risk of heat exhaustion and related health issues.
The notification stipulates that all electric water coolers, chillers, and ceiling fans in the jails must be kept functional to further enhance the comfort of inmates. This ensures that the cooling systems are operational at all times, providing much-needed relief from the heat.
These precautions will be in place until August 31, according to the notification.
