Srinagar records second hottest Sept day in 132 years


SRINAGAR: As heatwave conditions continue in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar recorded September’s second-highest day temperature in 132 years on Tuesday.

According to Kashmir Media Service, an official of the local meteorological department said that Srinagar, Qazigund and Kokernag recorded record-breaking severe heat waves.

“Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 34.2°C, which is 6.0°C above normal. This is the 2nd highest maximum temperature ever recorded in September since 1891. It has broken the 53-year-old record of 33.8°C recorded on 01 September 1970,” he said. The all-time highest temperature of 35.0°C was recorded on 18 September 1934, he added.

Moreover, Kokernag and Qazigund continued to witness severe heatwave conditions as the mercury settled 6.6 degrees Celsius and 6.7 degrees Celsius above normal respectively.

In Qazigund, the maximum temperature was recorded at 33.2 degrees Celsius, he said, adding that the previous record was 32.8 degrees Celsius on 12 September 2019 while the all-time record is 33.2 degrees Celsius.

The maximum temperature in Kokernag settled at 32.0 degrees Celsius, which is also similar to the all-time hottest day in September recorded in 1977. INP
