Sugar hits Rs200 per kg as prices continue to soar

sugar prices cross Rs 200 mark in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Despite the federal government’s decision to import sugar through the public sector to stabilise prices, the sugar prices across the country continue to rise.

The Ministry of National Food Security had given the nod to import 500,000 metric tonnes of sugar to stabilise market prices and manipulation.

Despite these measures, the sugar prices across the country have surged to nearly Rs 200 per kilogram, raising concerns amongst the citizens.

In Quetta, the price of sugar has jumped from Rs180 to Rs195 per kilogram. Locals have complained that the administration has failed to control inflation and has not taken any notice of the rising prices of essential goods.

In Peshawar, the per kilo price of sugar has hit Rs200. A 50 kg bag of sugar has seen a Rs 500 increase, now being sold at Rs 10,000.

Sugar prices are also steadily increasing in Lahore, adding to the public’s woes.

In wholesale markets, a 50 kg sack of sugar is now being sold for Rs 9,000, while the per kilogram rate has reached Rs 180.

Retail prices are even higher, with sugar being sold at Rs200 to Rs210 per kilo in various markets.

According to the traders, the price hike is due to supply shortages and hoarding

Citizens say the government and concerned departments have failed to control inflation, while profiteers are taking full advantage of the situation.
