Supreme Court fees hiked up massively

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has massively increased fees for various cases and petitions, with some categories seeing a rise of up to 4,900 per cent. The law minister told the National Assembly the matter would be taken up with relevant authorities for review.

As per the details, the fee for filing a new case has jumped from Rs250 to Rs2,500. The review petition fee has risen from Rs125 to Rs1,250, an increase of 900 per cent. The challan fee for a constitutional petition has also been raised from Rs250 to Rs2,500, while the security challan for a review petition has gone up from Rs10,000 to Rs50,000.

The fee for an intra-court appeal has been increased from Rs250 to Rs5,000. The attorney’s ticket has surged from Rs10 to Rs500, a rise of over 4,900 per cent, and the affidavit ticket from Rs12 to Rs500.

HIKE IN COURT FEES TO BE REVIEWED

Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar told the National Assembly on Tuesday that the sharp increase in Supreme Court fees would be taken up with the relevant authorities for review.

Responding to a point of order by Sardar Latif Khosa, the minister said the determination and revision of court fees was the prerogative of the Supreme Court, either through the full court or the Chief Justice. He noted that the recent revision was the first in several decades and brought substantial increases in certain categories.

Tarar said in Punjab, bar association representatives had met the Lahore High Court Chief Justice and the provincial law minister, after which the fees were adjusted to a reasonable level. He assured the same approach would be considered in other jurisdictions.

He added that matters under his ministry’s direct purview would be addressed on priority, while others requiring legal procedures would be handled as per law. The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the legal community and ensuring fairness in judicial proceedings.
