Supreme Court upholds sentences for in Bhutto conspiracy case

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) upheld the sentences of two retired army officers, involved in the conspiracy to topple Benazir Bhutto’s government.

The SC rejected the appeals against the sentences of Colonel (r) Azad Minhas and Colonel (r) Inayatullah. Both former army officers are accused of plotting to overthrow the then-prime minister Benazir Bhutto’s government in 1995.

Pervez Elahi’s bail application hearing postponed

The Field Court Martial had sentenced Azad Minhas to two-year and Inayatullah to four-year imprisonment, with hard labor. They were also dismissed from duty.

SC had reserved the decision on appeals on February 15. On Tuesday, it was read out by Justice Muneeb Akhtar of the Supreme Court.

Earlier, the Lahore High Court (LHC) had also rejected the appeal petitions, after which the accused had approached the Supreme Court in 2016.
