Sutlej River flood: Several villages in Kasur inundated

Evacuations start as Sutlej River flooding submerges several villages in Kasur

LAHORE: The rising waters of the River Sutlej have inundated several villages in Kasur, causing widespread damage and displacing residents.

Authorities had earlier warned of a severe flood threat as water levels in the Sutlej, one of the eastern rivers entering Pakistan from India, were expected to surge within 48 hours.

India’s sudden release of excess water into the Sutlej has triggered flooding in Kasur’s Ganda Singh Wala area, submerging villages and destroying thousands of acres of farmland.

Floodwaters have swept into homes, fields, and crops, leaving the local population in distress. In Bakkhi Wala village, residents have sought refuge on rooftops to escape the rising waters.

Agricultural land stretching from Gar Aimanpura to Kothi Fateh Muhammad now lies completely underwater. The district administration has imposed Section 144 in the affected areas to maintain order and ensure safety.

Rain, thunderstorms forecast for Islamabad

Evacuations are underway in multiple villages, with more than ten flood relief camps established. The Pakistan Army has also set up relief centres and is actively assisting in rescue operations.

According to the Flood Forecasting Division in Lahore, a medium-level flood is currently passing through Head Sulemanki. The River Chenab is swelling as well, with low flood levels recorded at Marala and Khanki.

Meanwhile, moderate flooding is being reported at Guddu and Sukkur barrages on the River Indus, while Tarbela, Kalabagh, and Chashma are experiencing water levels high enough to cause low flood situations, the division said.
