Mechanic converts 1998 Suzuki Khyber into a hybrid vehicle

LAHORE: A video has recently gone viral on Facebook and Instagram featuring a mechanic who claims to have converted an almost 26-year-old Suzuki Khyber into a hybrid vehicle.

In the video, the interviewer praises the Pakistani mechanic and asks how the 1990s fuel-powered car was converted into a hybrid. The mechanic explains that he installed a hybrid car battery and motor in the trunk of the 1998 Suzuki Khyber model, though they appear to be placed rather than securely fixed.

Despite not providing in-depth details of the conversion process, here’s how the batteries look inside the trunk:

When asked which cars can be converted into hybrids, he responds that almost all small cars are suitable for such a conversion. However, regarding the car’s speed, he mentions that the ‘hybrid’ Suzuki Khyber can reach up to 90 kilometres per hour.

This is not the first time similar experiments with old cars have surfaced online. There are videos on YouTube, posted over two years ago, where Pakistani YouTubers interview local mechanics who claim to have converted old models into hybrid cars.

While the idea of buying an old small hatchback and converting it into a hybrid vehicle might seem appealing, the reliability of such conversions remains uncertain. After spending money on restoration and hybrid motor and battery installation, it is unclear how long these hybrid vehicles will last.

Proper research is necessary, and those intrigued by such videos should seek professional advice before attempting to create a hybrid Suzuki Khyber or a similar vehicle. Although the concept may appear to offer fuel savings, the durability of these modified cars may not be long-lasting.

Nevertheless, the sight of a soundless Suzuki Khyber quietly passing by on the street is certainly an unusual and intriguing thought.
