Building collapse

MULTAN: In the early hours of Tuesday, tragedy struck Multan as an old three-story residential building crumbled to the ground, claiming the lives of nine individuals, according to authorities.

Building collapse in Multan leaves at least six dead

Among the deceased were four members of a single family, compounding the heartache of the community.

The harrowing event serves as a stark reminder of the perilous conditions many Pakistanis face due to poorly constructed buildings, lack of timely repairs and maintenance and lax adherence to safety regulations. Sadly, this is not an isolated incident in the country.

Pakistan has long grappled with the consequences of substandard construction practices, where structures are often built using inferior materials and safety protocols are disregarded in a bid to minimise expenses. This disregard for safety has led to numerous tragedies, with building collapses being distressingly frequent.

The memory of a similar catastrophe looms large in the nation’s recent history. In June 2020, Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, was rocked by the collapse of an apartment building, claiming the lives of 22 individuals.

A team has been formed to investigate the condition of nearby buildings.
