Tomato prices skyrocket across Pakistan


WEB DESK: In recent days, tomato prices skyrocketed across Pakistan, thrusting consumers into economic uncertainty as they already grapple with double-digit inflation.

In the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), consumers in the city of Abbottabad are forced to buy tomatoes at Rs450 per kilogram (kg). Similarly in Tank, the cost of tomatoes doubled in a week, reaching Rs400 per kilogram.

In Kohat, tomatoes are being sold at Rs500 per kilogram, while in Mohmand district, prices have soared to Rs400 per kilogram.

Other areas within KP affected by increase in price include Rustam and Buner, where tomato prices have risen to Rs400 and Rs330 per kilogram, respectively. Similarly in Mardan and Peshawar, tomatoes are being sold for as high as Rs400 per kg.

In the country’s most populous province of Punjab, consumers found themselves buying tomatoes for as high as Rs400 per kilogram in Talagang. This is a significant increase from the previous week.

Kot Addu has seen a steep rise of Rs200 per kilogram, with tomatoes now priced at Rs400 per kilogram. Sahiwal and its surrounding areas are also facing prices ranging from Rs260 to Rs280 per kilogram.

Similarly, Raiwind and its surrounding areas witnessed a surge of Rs90, with tomatoes now being sold at Rs 240 per kilogram. In Chiniot and Khushab, prices have reached Rs250 and Rs240 per kilogram, respectively.

In Sheikhupura, prices have increased by Rs60 per kilogram, with tomatoes now selling at Rs240 per kilogram. Gujranwala experienced an increase of Rs30, with tomatoes now priced at Rs140 per kilogram.R

Finally, in Sialkot, consumers are facing a Rs70 increase per kilogram, with tomatoes now priced at Rs200 per kilogram.

Meanwhile, residents across Sindh also felt the pinch with Karachi experiencing a Rs20 uptick in tomato prices, bringing the cost to Rs100 per kilogram.
