ISLAMABAD: In order to contain rising accidents at the Salt Range, a plan has been finalized to construct a tunnel at motorway M2 Salt Range.
The issue of accidents at the Salt Range site was raised by Hum News. Following the coverage, the matter was brought to the Prime Minister’s Steering Committee, which recommended the construction of a tunnel.
General Manager of the National Highway Authority (NHA), Hafiz Tahir, while addressing the Committee meeting, confirmed that a tunnel will be built at the Salt Range site.
He stated that four firms participated in the feasibility study.
According to the NHA GM, the process of selecting a consultant is currently at the technical evaluation stage.
The firm that offers the lowest bid in the auction will present the feasibility study along with the design.
The 10-kilometer stretch through the Kallar Kahar Salt Range, once admired for its stunning landscape, has sadly become infamous for frequent accidents. Since the motorway’s opening, this stretch has claimed many lives.
The most dangerous aspect of the Salt Range is its steep inclines and sharp turns, which fail to meet international safety standards.

Despite the fact that the National Highways & Motorways Police (NH&MP) and the National Highway Authority (NHA) have implemented several measures that include deploying more NHMP officers and patrol vehicles, using advanced speed-measuring technology, improving road signage, establishing emergency climbing lanes, enhancing curve banking, and introducing a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) convoy system to reduce crashes in the Salt Range the number of accidents continues to increase.
