ISLAMABAD: Two barracks of Islamabad’s model jail have been completed, while the check post and the watch tower are nearing completion.
The model jail project’s inception goes as far back as 2011, but it was in 2021 when the project actually began. Back then it was estimated at a cost of Rs 3.9 billion. By 2023, the expected cost had escalated to Rs 7 billion due to hike in the cost of construction. Now the estimated cost has even exceeded Rs 8 billion. The continued delays, partly owing to the increasing costs, have kept the progress slow, but now Interior Minister Naqvi has issued orders to expedite the construction.
Mohsin Naqvi visited the under-construction model jail in Islamabad’s Sector H-16. Minister of State Talal Chaudhry was also accompanying him. The officials inspected various parts of the under-construction model jail.
Mohsin Naqvi also issued deadline to complete the first phase of the project this year. Speaking to media after the visit, he said that in the first phase, the model jail will have a capacity of 1500 prisoners.
He said that two more barracks of the model jail will also be completed within 90 days, along with a 34-bed hospital and kitchen in the jail.
He directed Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police to submit a plan for the deployment of staff in the model jail.
