NEW YORK: The UN Security Council (UNSC) has unanimously adopted a Pakistan-sponsored resolution on “Strengthening Mechanisms for Peaceful Settlement of Disputes”.
The resolution urged all nations to effectively utilise mechanisms for the peaceful settlement of disputes, such as negotiation, mediation, arbitration, judicial settlement, or other peaceful means.
The resolution was passed during an open debate chaired by Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar with all 15 members voting in favour.
Dar presided over the UNSC session as he chaired the open debate on “Promoting International Peace and Security through Multilateralism and the Peaceful Settlement of Disputes.”

The resolution marks an important contribution to the promotion of international peace and security through the use of preventive diplomacy, conflict prevention measures, and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
Security Council Resolution 2788 (2025) aims to strengthen mechanisms for the peaceful settlement of disputes, as envisaged in Chapter VI of the United Nations Charter. It urges member states to utilise peaceful means in resolving their disputes.
The resolution also calls on member states to take necessary measures for the effective implementation of UN Security Council resolutions related to the peaceful settlement of disputes.
Both member states and the United Nations are encouraged to explore ways to prevent disputes from escalating—through timely diplomatic efforts, mediation, confidence-building, and facilitation of dialogue at international, regional, and subregional levels.
The resolution further emphasises enhancing the role of regional and subregional organisations in peacefully settling disputes, and strengthening their cooperation with the United Nations.
As an active member of the Security Council, Pakistan seeks to contribute to the promotion and maintenance of international peace and security, particularly through the peaceful settlement of disputes. The adoption of the Pakistan-sponsored resolution serves as an important instrument in advancing these goals at both regional and global levels.
