US will respond in “due time” to Congressional letter on Imran Khan


The US State Department Spokesperson promised a response to a Congressional letter related to former Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday.

WASHINGTON: The United States (US) Department of State Spokesperson, Matthew Miller, promised a response to a Congressional letter related to former Prime Minister Imran Khan “in due time”, on Monday.

During a press briefing in Washington, the spokesperson confirmed the receipt of a letter signed by over 60 members of the US Congress regarding the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan.

Imran Khan is currently incarcerated in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on several charges. He has consistently talked about ill-treatment while serving a lengthy sentence in the infamous prison.

The Congressional letter called on the US president, Joe Biden, to advocate for the release of the former prime minister and to prioritise human rights within Pakistan.

The letter also called for efforts to secure the release of other political prisoners, with concern raised about the PTI founder’s treatment in Adiala Jail.

The letter also called for facilitating a meeting with Imran Khan in prison to closely monitor his situation.

The State Department spokesperson also talked about the importance of importance of democracy in Pakistan. Miller stated that participation in the democratic process was a fundamental right.

He stated that the US was committed to fostering a robust and well-functioning democracy in the nation of 240 million.
