Uzbekistan visit: PM Shehbaz Sharif signs MoUs to boost bilateral ties


TASHKENT: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev attended a signing ceremony in Tashkent during the premier’s two-day visit, where Pakistan and Uzbekistan inked multiple agreements to enhance cooperation. PM Sharif arrived in Tashkent on Tuesday evening.

The countries have signed a joint declaration and exchanged memorandums of understanding (MoUs) on information sharing, youth affairs, diplomatic passports, and science and technology collaboration. The agreements aim to strengthen bilateral relations and promote regional cooperation.

Both leaders stressed the need for greater collaboration in trade, technology and diplomatic affairs, which is significant for Pakistan’s commitment to fostering strategic ties with Uzbekistan.

PM Sharif praised the Uzbek President for warmly welcoming the Pakistani delegation, and referred to Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening ties with Uzbekistan: “Pakistan and Uzbekistan share deep-rooted historical ties, relationship between the two nations spans centuries, with figures like Zahir-ud-Din Babar and Amir Timur shaping history. Collaboration in various sectors will enhance bilateral relations.”

He added that the relations between the two countries are moving in a positive direction and that President Mirziyoyev has played a key role in improving bilateral ties.

“Strong relations will be transformed into investment and trade partnerships, and increasing trade and investment will be beneficial for both nations. Uzbekistan is a trusted partner of Pakistan, and both countries are committed to mutual prosperity and development,” he said. PM Sharif also remarked that to him Uzbekistan felt like a second home.

President emphasised the importance of relations with Pakistan, stating that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit would open a new chapter in their strategic partnership. He also highlighted productive discussions, stressing the significance of agreements for a bright future. He also reaffirmed their commitment to joint measures to tackle challenges.

The talks also covered boosting bilateral trade to USD two billion, enhancing cooperation in agriculture, textiles, and energy, and supporting each other globally. Direct flights between Tashkent and Lahore were also deemed beneficial for both nations.
