Water pipeline fixed: Karachi residents breathe sigh of relief

Karachi water supply

KARACHI: Karachi residents have breathed a sigh of relief after the city’s main water pipeline was finally fixed and the water supply was restored.

The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) announced on Friday that the repair of the 84-inch water pipeline on University Road has been completed.

The pipeline, which developed three consecutive leaks, had caused a major disruption in water supply to various areas of the city including Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Mosmiyat, Safoora, multiple blocks of Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Bahadurabad, Tariq Road, Saddar, and Lyari.

The pipeline, running along the alignment of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Red Line project, initially burst on November 29 during construction work.

Due to the damage, several water pumps of Dhabeji Pumping Station were shut down causing a loss of 150 million gallons of water per day (MGD) for the city.

In a statement, the KWSC confirmed that the repair work is now complete, and 12 pumps have resumed operation to restore the water supply.

With the repair of the pipeline areas near University Road have begun receiving water, with supply gradually normalizing in Clifton, Defence, Old City, and Lyari. Other localities, such as Khudadad Colony, PECHS Society, and Liaquatabad, are expected to see restoration soon.
