Weather today: Heavy rains, flooding expected across Pakistan


The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) warned of severe weather, with heavy rains and urban flooding expected across the country on Saturday (today).

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) warned of severe weather, with heavy rains and urban flooding expected across the country on Saturday (today).

Heavy rainfall will impact Islamabad, Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Balochistan, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB). Intermittent rainfall is likely to fall in southern and central Punjab, and eastern Balochistan.

Weather today

Heavy rains are expected to hit the southern and central parts of the country, including Kohlu, Bolan, Harnai and Naserabad. Residents can expect significant showers in urban areas – Multan, Lahore and Faisalabad.

In Sindh, cities such as Hyderbaad and Karachi are at high risk of urban flooding due to intense rainfall.

Meanwhile, northern Pakistan, including GB will also witness a heavy downpour.

PMD warns of landslides, flooding

The PMD issued warnings of flash floods, urban flooding and landslides across Pakistan. The Met Office in particular mentioned flash flooding in Chitral and Dera Ghazi Khan starting from Saturday night.

Urban flooding is likely to hit low-lying areas of Sindh, Islamabad and rest of Potohar plateau.

Commuters should exercise caution on roads in northern areas as landslides are expected in KP, northern Punjab, Kashmir and GB.

Monsoons and “westerly wave” fueling heavy rains

The Met Office attributed the severe weather today to monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, along with a “westerly wave”.
