WEB DESK: Pakistanis are being denied Schengen visas at the highest rate in the world, with nearly half of all Pakistani passport applications rejected in 2024, according to data analysed by Gallup Pakistan. Despite 40,000 visas being issued, a figure consistent with 2023, the rejection rate stands at a staggering 50%, far exceeding the global average.
In contrast, neighbouring India received close to one million Schengen visas this year with a rejection rate of just 17percent, highlighting a stark disparity in visa accessibility. Germany remains the most sought-after destination for Pakistani applicants, followed by Spain and the Netherlands.
The high refusal rate has significant implications beyond travel restrictions. Business professionals, researchers, and students are among those most affected, missing out on crucial opportunities for trade, education, and collaboration. The emerging upper-middle class, which could contribute to global economic engagement, is particularly impacted.

Experts suggest multiple factors behind the trend, including incomplete documentation, insufficient proof of financial stability, and Pakistan’s geopolitical image. However, critics argue that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not done enough to address the issue or engage with European authorities to ease the process.
Gallup Pakistan’s data reveals a pressing need for policy intervention to improve visa accessibility.
As rejections continue to hinder mobility, calls are growing for the government to take diplomatic action. Without stronger advocacy, Pakistanis may keep facing the world’s toughest Schengen visa barriers, limiting their ability to work, study, and connect globally.
