Will administer oath if Nawaz becomes prime minister: President Alvi

President Alvi

ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi has said that there were multiple reasons for the unsuccessful reconciliation between the army and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan.

Talking to Voice of America Urdu, he stated that he would administer the oath if Nawaz Sharif becomes the prime minister as the constitution mandated him to do so.

President Alvi said that it was the joint responsibility of the election commission and the government to provide equitable and level playing field to all political parties contesting upcoming elections.

He said that the decision regarding the PTI chairman’s participation in the election lies with the court.

President Alvi said that he explicitly condemned the May 9 events and declared his stance against politics rooted in violence.

He expressed optimism that collaborative efforts among politicians, the administration, and the establishment could lead to effective problem-solving.

President Alvi, who is also a PTI leader, has been trying to bridge the gap between the army and PTI since the cipher case. He has urged both sides to reconcile and cooperate for the sake of the country’s stability and democracy. He has also proposed meetings between the opposing camps in which “everything can be discussed, including early elections as well”.

However, Alvi’s efforts have not yielded any positive results so far. The army and PTI remain distrustful and hostile towards each other.
