LAHORE: At least seven people lost their lives and 41 others were injured after powerful windstorm and heavy rain wreaked havoc across Punjab.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) released a preliminary report on Saturday outlining the damages caused by the storm across the province.

The report said that storm-related incidents claimed seven lives and injured 41 people. One person died in Rawalpindi, three in Jhelum and one each in Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib and Sialkot.

The PDMA noted that the fatalities were primarily caused by the collapse of dilapidated houses and exposure to unsafe structures. Several mud and rundown houses were also damaged due to the storm, according to the PDMA.

Meanwhile, Punjab Relief Commissioner Nabeel Javed has directed commissioners, deputy commissioners and rescue agencies across the province to remain on high alert.

He also directed Rescue 1122 and other emergency services to keep their teams and machinery on standby.

Javed said that affected families will be provided financial assistance in accordance with the Punjab government’s policy.

He said that the provincial control room and all district emergency operation centres have been placed on alert. Monitoring at the PDMA control room is ongoing 24/7.

Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during bad weather and to stay indoors or in safe locations. They have also been urged to maintain a safe distance from electric poles and dangling wires.

The PDMA further cautioned that people should take shelter during lightning and storms, and must not remain outdoors during such conditions.

Parents have been asked to take special care of children, who must not be allowed near fragile or rundown buildings.

In case of emergency, citizens have been advised to call the PDMA helpline at 1129.
