World Cancer Day: President, PM reaffirm commitment to fight cancer

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan joins the world in observing World Cancer Day today, with a renewed commitment to raising awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment.

The theme for World Cancer Day 2025-2027, “United by Unique,” highlights the need for collective action in tackling this life-threatening disease.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have pledged the nation’s support for global efforts to combat cancer.

In his message, President Zardari emphasised that the day serves as a reminder of the immense challenges posed by cancer and offers an opportunity to inspire hope through collective action, medical innovation, and resilience.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening cancer care infrastructure, investing in research, and ensuring access to affordable, quality treatment. H

e urged Pakistanis to seek timely medical consultations and screenings while emphasising the importance of public awareness in preventing, diagnosing, and treating cancer effectively.

CANCER IN PAKISTAN: A GROWING HEALTH CRISIS

Cancer remains a major public health issue in Pakistan, with high mortality rates and increasing cases reported every year. Some of the most prevalent types of cancer in the country include:

Breast Cancer: Pakistan has one of the highest breast cancer mortality rates in the world. It is the most common cancer among adult females.

Lip and Mouth Cancer: The second most prevalent cancer in Pakistan and the most common among men, often linked to tobacco use.

Colorectal Cancer: A widespread cancer affecting both men and women.

Prostate Cancer: A leading cancer in adult males, requiring greater awareness and early detection.

Hodgkin Lymphoma: A common form of cancer found in children.

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia: Another major cancer affecting children in the country.
