Barrister Gohar urges government to set a timeline for negotiations

Barrister Gohar

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Terhreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar has urged the federal government to define a clear timeline for its ongoing negotiations with the opposition.

Speaking to media after meeting the incarcerated founder of his party at Adiala Jail on Tuesday, he said the request for defining a clear timeline for the negotiations was put forth by Imran Khan.

According to Gohar, he briefed the former prime minister on the progress of the ongoing talks between government and the opposition.

The first round of dialogue – chaired by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq –held at the speaker chamber on Monday. After the meeting, the speaker announced that the second round of talks was proposed for January 2, during which opposition committee members would present a detailed charter of demands in writing.

Ayaz Sadiq said that the efforts for these negotiations should be looked upon in a positive light. “The environment in today’s meeting was very positive. We want political chaos to end. We wish to work together for the betterment of the country,” he said.

In his informal media talk at the jail’s gate, Gohar also addressed concerns about PTI’s representation in the negotiations, explaining that four party members, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, were unable to attend due to prior commitments. He noted that Speaker Sadiq had been informed of their absence in advance.

Regarding his meeting with Imran Khan, Gohar said discussions focused on advancing meaningful dialogue with the government.

He added that all previous cases against the PTI founder were politically motivated, and Khan is currently on bail except for the £190 million reference, which is pending a ruling in January. “If the case is handled transparently, Khan will secure bail in this matter as well,” Gohar said.

Expressing optimism, he said, “We hope these negotiations will yield positive outcomes, and we aim to navigate through the challenges the party currently faces.”
