Court hands life sentence to Imran Khan’s attacker

GUJRANWALA: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Gujranwala on Thursday announced its verdict in the attack case on Imran Khan, sentencing prime accused Naveed to two terms of life imprisonment under charges of murder and terrorism.

The court handed Naveed separate life sentences under two sections — for the murder of PTI worker Moazzam and for committing an act of terrorism — along with a fine of Rs500,000.

Additionally, Naveed was awarded three to five years of imprisonment for injuring four others during the attack.

Meanwhile, the court acquitted co-accused Tayyab Jahangir Butt and Waqas after being given the benefit of doubt.

In its verdict, the court stated that all sentences awarded to Naveed would run concurrently.

Earlier, in February 2023, the Gujranwala ATC had approved the bail plea of another accused, Ahsan — the brother of the PML-N district information secretary — in the same case, while rejecting the bail request of Waqas.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder was attacked in November 2022 during the PTI’s long march in Wazirabad, Punjab, when a gunman opened fire, injuring former prime minister Imran Khan, Senator Faisal Javed, and several others, while one PTI worker was killed.

Following the incident, Imran Khan levelled accusations against senior government officials, leading to controversy over the registration of the case.

Eventually, a First Information Report (FIR) was filed on November 7, and a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) was formed under the Anti-Terrorism Act of 1997.
