ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission has disqualified the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman for a period of five years under Article 63(h), which bars anyone who has been convicted of an offence involving moral turpitude from being a member of parliament.
According to the ECP notification, the PTI chairman, who was also a member of the National Assembly from Constituency NA-45, Kurram-1, has been disqualified as a member of the National Assembly under Article 63(h).

Additionally, the PTI chairman has been sentenced to three years in prison and fined Rs0.3 million.
The disqualification of the PTI chief is a major blow to the party leadership and its supporters, who had hoped to challenge the PML-N in the next general election expected in 2023.
Under Pakistani laws, a convicted person cannot run for public office for a period defined by the ECP, which could be up to a maximum of five years.
