ECP submits reports to Supreme Court on PTI contempt case

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has submitted a comprehensive report to the Supreme Court addressing the Contempt of Court case pertaining to allegations of Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) not receiving a level playing field during the electoral process.

The report categorically rejects the accusations made by PTI, asserting that the party was provided with a fair and impartial electoral environment. The ECP has urged the Supreme Court to dismiss PTI’s application and impose a fine in light of the unsubstantiated claims.

The report adds that ECP officials held a meeting with the PTI leaders, under the directives of the Supreme Court. In the meeting where assurances were given regarding the provision of a level playing field without any form of discrimination. The ECP further conveyed instructions to the Inspector Generals (IGs) of the four provinces in the same regard.

As of December 26, a total of 33 complaints were filed across the country on behalf of Tehreek-e-Insaf. The ECP included detailed action instructions on these complaints in the submitted report to the Supreme Court. Reports from the Inspector Generals (IGs), Chief Secretaries, and Returning Officers (ROs) were submitted, outlining the implementation of corrective measures in response to PTI’s complaints. The ECP refuted allegations of bias in the context of the ROs’ reports.

The report submitted to the Supreme Court also provides statistical insights into the approval of nomination papers, revealing that out of 843 National Assembly nomination papers submitted by PTI, 598 were approved, while 245 were rejected. For provincial assemblies, 1,398 out of 1,777 nomination papers were accepted, with 379 rejections. This signifies an approval rate of 76.18 per cent for nomination papers of PTI’s candidates.

The ECP’s report serves as a comprehensive response to the accusations raised by PTI, emphasising the commitment to a fair electoral process and dispelling any doubts regarding the provision of a level playing field. The Supreme Court is expected to deliberate on the matter in due course.
